Cambridge SoundWorks intros i765 radio / iPod dock

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Those looking for a few more features than your standard iPod dock has to offer may want to take a gander at Cambridge Soundworks’ new i765 system, which packs in a CD / DVD player and a radio in addition to the usual accommodations for your iPod of choice (including the touch and other recent models). That DVD player, of course, means you’ll also be able to hook the unit up to your TV, although it appears that you’ll have to make do with either s-video or composite cables. Otherwise, you can expect a sizable LCD display that provides track details, along with a standard remote control, and a built-in powered subwoofer that Cambridge Soundworks claims will help to deliver “rich, natural sound” that’s capable of “filling any room of the home.” All that sound doesn’t come cheap, however, with this system setting you back a full $500.

Apple Unloads Dump Truck of Updates, Including 10.4.11 and Pro Applications [Software]

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

softwareupdate.pngIn addition to updating OS X Tiger to 10.4.11 for both Intel and PPC Macs, Apple’s pulled out their software dump truck and are updating almost all their apps. iPhoto, Pro Apps, Compressor, Cinema Tools, Color, Motion, DVD Studio Pro, Final Cut Pro, and Soundtrack Pro are all getting updates as well. In addition, there’s a security update for Panther 10.3.9, and a feature update for Safari on Windows that includes lots more shortcuts, more window resizing options, and spell/grammar check. Looks like there’s stuff for everyone. [Apple]

Max Headroom Joins ‘Watchmen’ Cast

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

matt-frewer-watchmen.jpg

It’s a shame that, at any given point, there are a fairly limited number of strong roles for bald, kind of annoying guys who are growing gaunter and harder to stare at with each passing moment. Because as much as I like to see Max Headroom himself, Matt Frewer, on screen, I never seem to find him outside of voice work and an occasional guest spot (and, of course, in my daily viewings of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids).

Thankfully, Zack Snyder has recognized a way to use Frewer’s unique, dying look in a high-profile film: as the cancer-stricken, demonic-looking villain Moloch in Watchmen. I can’t wait to see this boney head on screen. Seriously.

As a warning, those who said a film couldn’t be made using old costume pieces from Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes and Tyra Banks’s hair extensions are in for a sad shock.

Samsung’s Q1 UMPC down to $580

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

We aren’t generally ones to pass along gadget deals, but every so often an opportunity pops up that just seems too interesting to ignore. Merely 1.5 years after the highly-anticipated Q1 hit shelves for $1,100, the UMPC is available now (in refurbished fashion) for nearly half of that. Granted, you won’t be buying Sammy’s latest and greatest Q1, but maybe that inexplicably short battery life won’t bother you so much when you’re only shelling out $579.99. So, now that this thing has reached new lows (in price, that is), will you finally buy in, or will you try and squeeze one more year out that Newton?

[Thanks, Ben]

Chatwin, Marsters Join ‘Dragonball’

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

dragonball-chatwin-marsters.jpg

I still don’t fully understand why they’ve decided to film the long, confusing amalgam of giant, angular hair, motion lines, and, more importantly, the constant screaming that is what I’ve seen of the Dragonball anime. But they are. And since they are, I have to say, they’re doing a pretty decent job casting it.

For Goku, the lead protagonist, they’ve decided to go with Justin Chatwin, the annoying kid from War of the Worlds and The Invisible. From what I remember of Goku, he was either a man with a boyish face or a boy with a man-like body. Either way, it was easy to understand why the other characters were constantly trying to punch this man-child. It’s impressive they were able to find that same quality in a real actor.

To play the villain Piccolo, director James Wong has chosen Buffy star James Marsters, an actor whose face naturally carries the necessary evil angularity. It will be interesting to see if they keep the character’s signature white turban or if they decide to just sculpt Marsters bleached gel-chunks into something passable.

As I’ve said before, if they can make this into anything I can even loosely understand, it will already be a step above the pre-pubsecent Japanese mind explosion of the cartoon.

Cambridge Soundworks i765 Is DVD Player, Bonafide iPod Dock [Home Entertainment]

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Cambridge_Soundworks_i765.jpgIn my book, an outboard iPod dock shows lack of commitment. So while our own Charlie White loved the performance of the Cambridge Soundworks i745 iPod-friendly clock-radio, we are convinced that the new i765 is going to blow that old goose away. For starters, you can dock your iPod directly on top of the 14″-wide system. Better yet, it’s no longer just a CD-playing clock-radio, but a DVD player too, so it’s ideal for hooking up to that little LCD you’ve got—or plan on getting—for your bedroom. The downside is that the video drove the price up to $500, and there’s still no Wi-Fi or satellite radio. Sorry Charlie! [Cambridge Soundworks]

Samsung paves the way for 128GB memory card

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Filed under:

Samsung’s been blowing our minds with its memory advancements for years, so we’re not at all surprised that this very company has seemingly figured out a way (officially, that is) to concoct a 128GB memory card. The secret to such a capacious offering is a new manufacturing process dubbed self-aligned double patterning technology (SaDPT), which has enabled the firm to create the “world’s first” 64Gb multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory chip using 30-nanometer process technology. Up to 16 of the 64Gb units can be combined to create a drool-worthy 128GB memory card, which can easily hold a modest DVD collection or upwards of 32,000 MP3s (its number, not ours). Apparently, Sammy hopes to crank up production on the flash devices in 2009, but until then, we’ll just have to make do with its awe-inspiring 64GB SSD.

Drive Erazer gets rid of your data for good

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Drive Erazer

I’ve done a lot of computer repair in my day, which means clients begging me to recover lost data on their hard drives. In many cases I was able to get at least a portion of their precious data, however, there were times that called for fancy equipment that I did not possess. But what if you have such sensitive data that you don’t want anyone to ever recover it? The Drive Erazer promises to permanently destroy all information, never to be seen again.

Whether you’ve you’ve somehow acquired a massive collection of movies and mp3s that you’re not proud of, or work for a government agency and have sensitive data, sometimes you need to need to make sure the data is really gone. Sure, you could always try some DIY methods that may or may not work, but with this little guy you can wipe your drive and load it with generic content in less than two hours. This way when the RIAA comes beating on your door or a secret agent steals your PC, their efforts will be in vein. The Drive Erazer will set you back $99 for the basic model, or $149 for the Pro, which will get you multi-pass erasing.

Viggo Mortensen to be Stallone’s Poe Boy?

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

viggo-mortensen-poe.jpg

News of who may be cast as Edgar Allen Poe in Sylvester Stallone’s biopic, first meant to be written in the style of Poe, then changed to the style of something I’m more familiar with, the rhyming scheme of MTV’s NeXt spoken when someone gets “nexted” and has to go back to the bus:

Stallone’s looking for someone to play Poe
But for an actor, where should he go?
There were rumors he’d look to a “Hero”
and cast Ventimiglia, Milo,
but now he’s looking to Viggo (Mortensen)
to quoth “nevermo’.”
So it’s back to the bus for J.T.; Chad’s next!

(Note: the last line has nothing to do with the casting, but is necessary at the end of every NeXt poem.)

Paris Hilton still looks pregnanty

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

1114_paris_hilton_fragrance_01.jpg

Paris Hilton launched her new fragrance “Paris Hilton Can Can” at Macy’s in Long Island yesterday. And, son of a bitch, she still looks pregnant! It’s almost like she’s been getting dressed in the morning and saying, “I want to wear an outfit that will freak the living shit out of anyone with a basic idea of who I am.” At least I’m hoping that’s what’s going on here. Wait, why is she holding a cake? Pregnant chicks love cake. I saw that in a movie once, so it’s pretty much a scientific fact. Ah, Terminator. Once again you’ve educated me more than those book things.

Interact-TV’s MediaPool delivers 3.75TB of fanless storage space

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Interact-TV really hasn’t made a lot of noise since it unveiled the MyTellyHD Linux-based media server way back in January, but it’s cranking things back to 11 with the MediaPool Home Entertainment Server. This bad boy comes stocked with 3.75TB of configurable storage space — enough for around 750 DVDs — and was designed to play nice with the firm’s TellyVizionHD in order to create a swank PVR setup with near limitless room for content. Packed within the fanless MediaPool are five 750GB Seagate DB35-series HDDs, and all that open space can be linked up to your HTPC of choice via eSATA. The 3Gbps connection ensures that storing HD content won’t be an issue, and the blue backlit-display on the device’s front panel conveniently includes temperature readouts along with an overheat warning. Now, just as soon as we figure out how to sufficiently fill up nearly 4TB of HDD space with flicks, shows and tunes, we may consider picking one up — if it hasn’t been discontinued by then, that is.

Philips 7-inch PET722 DVD player: cause you’ll never reach the top

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Philips has this new 7-inch portable DVD player they’re scheming to release from the cold, damp origins of their Holland HQ. The PET722 is said to support a “variety of disc formats” including JPEG and MP3 files. A “smart sliding design” will keep you comfy as you squander your remaining hours watching other people’s adventurous lives from the safety of your own toilet. Gezellig!

Polk Audio’s SurroundBar 360 DVD Theater

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

As far as these surround sound bars go, Yamaha seems to have made quite the name for itself, but it looks like Polk Audio is offering up another iteration in its own lineup to compete. The SurroundBar 360 DVD Theater features a single 44-inch long speaker that purportedly provides a 5.1-channel experience “using patented SDA technology.” Furthermore, the system looks to come with a dedicated DVD console, but we’ve no idea if the pair will ever be offered up separately. No word on price / availability at the moment, but we’re expecting Polk to spill the rest of the beans sooner rather than later.

SentrySafe Fireproof Waterproof USB HDD Housings Save Your Data (Not You) From Armageddon [Supersafe]

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

SentrySafe_2.jpgSentrySafe has made safes for 70 years, but now they’ve teamed with Seagate/Maxtor to make hard-drive housings that withstand up to 1550degrees Fahrenheit for a half hour, and “full” 24-hour water submersion. Some like the Fire-Safe/Waterproof 80GB and 160GB ($320) drives are freestanding units that house 2.5″ bus-powered drives in impervious containers. The other alternative is a full-blown $520 safe that has a USB pass-through for your bus-powered drive. A third option is a smaller filing box, the Data Storage Safe, which lets you keep DVDs and other small documents along with a small USB drive. [SentrySafe]

Alienware M15x / M17x laptops revealed with NVIDIA 8800M GTX

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Filed under:

It’s no secret that Alienware laptops have long loved to pack some serious NVIDIA-based heat, and judging by screenshots (another shown after the jump) of a reported slip up earlier today, those scouting a new extraterrestrial rig might want to hold out just a tick longer. It looks as if the firm will soon be unveiling (officially, that is) the 15-inch M15x and 17-inch M17x gaming laptops, both of which will seemingly be available with the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800M GTX graphics processor. As for the 8M-series GPU, it’ll boast full DirectX 10 support, the Lumenex Engine, second-generation PureVideo HD technology, a 500MHz core clock, 1,250MHz shader clock and an 800MHz memory clock. Regarding the actual lappies, all we know is that the smaller of the two will be available with a 1,440 x 900 resolution display, 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM, a 120GB HDD, dual-layer DVD writer and Vista Home Premium. We’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for something official, but don’t worry, it ought not be long now.

[Thanks, Andrew]

Philips and Lite-on announce a $199 Blu-ray drive

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

All the action in the next-gen format war might be at the front lines of cut-rate players, but the battle rages on across the entire spectrum of devices — which is why we’ve seen the poor $199 DH-401S BD-ROM drive from Philips and Lite-on touted as the answer to those $200 HD-A2s in a couple places. That’s quite a stretch, obviously, but it’s still much cheaper than any other BD-ROM drives we’ve seen. The read-only SATA drive pulls data off BD media at 4X, single layer DVDs at 12X, DVD-DL and DVD±RW at 8x, and CDs at 32X. Giving up write capabilites is obviously limiting, but for those of you building out HTPCs, this bad boy might be just the ticket.

Is Zune 2 Worth a Damn? [Zune Buyer’s Guide]

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

zunedamnasd.jpgHere’s what Zune has for us this year: a 4/8GB flash-based Zune that’s the same size as the 2nd Generation nano, a 30GB first-generation Zune that gets updated features and firmware, and a 80GB Zune with the improved Zune pad and larger storage. The question to both new customers and owners of the first-gen: is the Zune 2 worth a damn? The answer is yes, yes it is.

Flash Zune: It’s got a great cool scroll pad, high quality screen, ample storage in a slim price, plus just about all the features in the big boy Zunes (including Wi-Fi sync). Verdict: Buy it if you’re in the market for a tiny player that does video and Wi-Fi sync.

Zune 30: All the features of the 80GB Zune, but actually the cheapest of the three at under $99 because it’s last year’s hardware. Verdict: Buy it if you’re looking for a great way to break into the Zune ecosystem if you don’t need the slimness or storage space of the 80GB model, or the portability of the 4/8GB model, or the fancy new Zune pad.

Zune 80: At 80GB, the top end Zune will hold tons of music and movies, which can be synced automatically via Wi-Fi when you’re not looking. Add to that a solid, if basic, software package, the Zune 80’s a definite contender to the iPod classic crown. Verdict: Buy it if you want the most space and the most features out of the three options.

Security Camera Captures Image of Ghost? [Ghost Video]

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

A surveillance camera at a Parma, Ohio gas station caught some footage of what appeared to be a blue ghost last Sunday, and everybody was immediately calling the blue cloud an angel, attributing it to buried Indians from long ago, and evoking all sorts of supernatural beings.

One guy might’ve had it right: Maybe was a plastic bag. Could it have been an out-of-focus blue plastic bag dancing around with the wind like that one in the film American Beauty? Could an artifact like this have been caused by a cheap security camera? In this video, it’s unclear whether people saw this “ghost” with their own eyes, or just watched a video of it. Mysterious. ‘City of Men’ Trailer is Less Than Godly

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

city-of-men-trailer.jpg

As someone who is not impoverished or surrounded by constant murder, there’s nothing I like more than seeing the suffering of those who are, along with the assurance that such a lifestyle is far away from me and all my cool stuff–like in Brazil. This mentality–the same one that sells copies of BumFights (videos of hobo fisticuffs)–led to my love of 2002’s City of God. It also helped that it was powerful, well written and acted, and beautifully shot. However, the film’s upcoming sequel, City of Men, gives me some reservations from this trailer.

First, do we need to pretend it’s in English by removing all dialog and replacing it with lengthy, expository voice-over? I think City of God was popular enough you can bank on that without making it a parody of Edgar Wright’s Don’t trailer.

Second, saying “from the producers of” is equivalent to saying “we couldn’t get any of the actual talent from the first film to make another one, and there’s probably a strong reason for that.”

And finally, what’s up with the downgraded name? City of Men? If man is less than God, what can I expect from this sequel? You might as well call the Transformers sequel “Standard, Non-transforming Cars.”

European Blu-ray Chairman calls HD DVD Group’s actions "unbelievable"

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

While it’s not exactly a surprise that the Blu-ray folks are getting in yet another tussle with their counterparts in the HD DVD camp, the latest comments by the Blu-Ray Disc Association’s European Chariman Frank Simonis do up the ante quite a bit, with some alleged misrepresentation of data on the HD DVD Group’s part drawing most of his ire. More specifically, according to Tech.co.uk, Simonis is upset at the significantly higher “attach rate” that the European HD DVD Group recently touted, which Simonis now says was a “gross misrepresentation of data.” Simonis goes on to claim that the HD DVD Group “manipulated” the data, adding that, “you can see this because they did not even supply access to the original source of their numbers.” As if that wasn’t enough, he then further slams the HD DVD folks by saying, “Honest to God, the Blu-ray Disc Association would never do this. We’ve seen so much rubbish come from the HD DVD Group it’s unbelievable.”

[Thanks, Micheal]

First Look at Quinto Doing Spock Impression

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

zachary-quinto-spock.jpg

As apt as Zachary Quinto looks for the part of Spock, I can’t help but think this is going to turn into something like the Bob Dylan picture I’m Not There, where half of the movie is spent determining who can do the best impression. Look how much he looks like Spock! Wow, he’s doing that strange, droning voice of Sulu! He sounds just like a Scottish caricature!

It’s also possible this is just Jason Schwartzman playing an elfin nerd.

LEGO Aliens Scenes Look Pretty Damn Good

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

alien-LEGO.jpg

Mike Yoder, a man who loves both LEGO and Aliens made a bunch of LEGO dioramas from scenes in the movie. They look pretty freaking good if you ask me, so props to Mike, especially for the lighting, etc. that give the pictures that movie feel. He’s really inspired me to make a few LEGO dioramas of my favorite movies. Which will be a lot simpler. I’m basically just going to need to build a couch or bed, and then to throw in a couple naked LEGO figures. TA-DA — Brick Lickers From LEGOLAND. Bow chicka bow bow.

I posted a few more pictures after the jump, but be sure to check out the whole gallery if you’re into them.

Zero House From the Future is Totally Green, Off-Grid [Green Living]

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

zero_house_front.jpgNot only is this Zero House by architect Scott Specht completely green, automatic and self-sufficient, but it looks so badass it could’ve come out of the movie Clockwork Orange. That extra wide roof holds a slew of high-efficiency solar panels that let you say goodbye to electric bills, powering the whole house and storing up enough extra energy in its batteries to keep everything running for a week, even if every single day is cloudy. That’s just the beginning.

zero_house2.jpg
The house holds its water in a 2700-gallon roof cistern, and the sheer weight of all that liquid pushes water through the plumbing. When you flush the toilets, it all ends up in a compost container in the basement, which digests all that stuff organically, relieving you of attaching your abode to any sewage pipes. Goodbye, civilization.
zero_house3.jpg
Even so, this house is highly civilized unto itself, with LED lighting built into the walls and ceiling, using very little power and lasting 100,000 hours without changing a single bulb. It’s off-the-grid living, in gorgeous style. Cantilevers, anyone? [Architechnophilia, via Yanko Design]

Intel rolls out 45nm microprocessors

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

intel-45nm.jpgIntel has recently released sixteen new chips that incorporate the 45nm Hafnium-based high-k metal gate transistors which have been proven to be smaller, faster and more eco-friendly than previous generations. According to Gordon E. Moore, co-founder of Intel, he thinks that this new process is a major breakthrough as the biggest transistor advancement in 40 years. In addition, this improvement is tipped to further extend Moore’s Law - at least for a little while longer when other folks thought that it is done and over with already.

These new processors managed to cram in a whopping 420 million transistors into each individual dual core chip, while each quad core chip has double that amount - which translates to nearly a 100% increase in transistor density compared to previous models. Both the Intel Core 2 Extreme and Xeon processors also hold the distinction of being the first to be manufactured on the 45 nanometer scale - a move that sees performance being boosted to unprecedented levels while lowering power consumption, a step that ought to go down well with folks who think that PCs consume way too much power than they should.

A dozen new quad-core chips will feature clock speeds that range between 2GHz and 3.20GHz, featuring front side bus speeds of up to 1600MHz, while cache sizes have reached an amazing 12MB in size. Not only that, three new dual-core chips boast clock speeds of up to 3.40GHz, a front side bus speed of up to 1600MHz, and cache sizes of 6MB. As for the 45nm Hi-k Intel Xeon processors, they are compatible with server platforms using the Intel 5000 chipset family. Three other platform solutions that support the new 45nm processors are:

- The Intel 5400 chipset-based platform (previously codenamed “Stoakley”) that is optimized for high-bandwidth applications like high-performance computing
(HPC).

-The Intel 5100 Memory Controller Hub chipset and Intel ICH-9R I/O controller (previously codenamed “Cranberry Lake”). These are cost-optimized solutions
that support either one or two processors and also provide reduced power consumption using native DDR2 memory.

- The Intel 3200 chipset-based platform (previously codenamed “Garlow”) that is specifically designed for single-processor entry servers.

Intra-Body Communication: Use Your Body to Download Data [Magic Touch]

Monday, November 12th, 2007

kddi.jpgImagine being able to download a movie or album to your media player by simply touching a promotional poster or exchanging contact information with a potential client via a handshake. KDDI’s new Intra-Body Communication technology could make this a reality by using the human body as a conduit to transmit high-volume data. In the image above, the video is being transmitted from the girl’s hand, through her body to the glasses, and out to the monitor.

In a hands-on with the system, the team at CScout Japan noted that the setup was easy to use and they were surprised at the quality of data. Naturally, this technology is not quite ready for prime time, but if further tests prove successful, it may pop up in a strip joint near you sometime in the not too distant future. Think of the possibilities. [CScoutJapan]

Panasonic Toughbook Y7, T7 and W7 Are Built to Take a Business-Class Beating [Laptops]

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Panasonic_Toughbook_Y7_T7_W7.jpgPanasonic’s newest Toughbook Y7, T7 and W7 are designed to combat the Homer in you: that is, they’re for people who work with sensitive data yet are prone to dropping laptops, spilling drinks and generally messing stuff up. Forget accelerometers, the hard drives in this can take a serious hit at 2.5 feet and on 26 different axes. The LCDs, typically shatter-prone glass, can survive a one-foot drop without cracking. As far as proofing against the inevitable beverage malfunction, the Toughbook can take over six ounces of liquid continuously, meaning if you spill half a can of soda on that sucker, you can pour an equal amount of water through there to flush out the bad stuff. Just pour slow: if the drain backs up, you can still cause damage. Here’s how the three different systems fall into place:

All three systems sport a 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, between 1GB and 2GB of RAM, Bluetooth, an SD card slot and a shock-mounted 80GB hard drive. They are all mobile broadband “ready,” which means integrated antenna and Mini PCI slot for the wireless WAN card of your choice.

The Y7 has a 14.1″ screen, weighs just 3.7lbs and can run for five hours on a single battery charge. The W7, with 12″ screen, weighs just 3lbs even, and can make it seven hours on a charge. Both of those systems have DVD Super Multi Drive for massive multiple-format burning.

The T in T7 stands for “tablet,” complete with touchscreen. The trade-off is there’s no optical drive. The T7 weighs about 3.3 lbs, and can last the longest of them all, up to eight hours, on its battery. A hand strap on the T7 (shown in the gallery) means you can hang on tight, just in case you don’t want to test the shock-proof claims.

These tough little buggers are still mainly geared toward military and industrial customers, but if you are interested, pricing is on the high side: roughly $2,400 for the Y7, and around $2,100 for the W7 and T7. [Panasonic Toughbook]

Indiana Jones Legos Reveal Key Scenes, Desperation

Monday, November 12th, 2007

indiana-jones-legos.jpg

We’ve reached a new point of desperation for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull information. With no spy reports, stolen images, or script pages, we’ve turned to the Deepthroat of movie information, Lego, to provide us with cryptic clues in the names of their interlocking brick sets. Here are the names of the four new sets to be released in May, along with what could be the corresponding scenes:

1. 7624 Jungle Duel - Indiana Jones will, apparently, duel someone in an undetermined jungle.

2. 7625 River Chase - Someone will be chased on, or alongside, a river. Maybe Indiana Jones is chasing someone. Maybe someone is chasing Indiana Jones. Maybe it goes back and forth, like that scene from the “Rabbit of Seville” Looney Tunes.

3. 7626 Jungle Cutter - Indiana Jones applies a thick coating of Cutter to protect against the insects of the jungle.

4. 7627 Temple of the Crystal Skull - A kingdom and a temple? This thing is chock-full of crystal skulls!

Next up: What do Harrison Ford’s droppings tell us about Indiana Jones’s eating habits?
